A Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Excellence

Before establishing Physician’s Vascular Services, Dr. Joseph B. Furlong built a distinguished military career grounded in discipline, leadership, and service to the country.

Dr. Furlong began his academic and military journey at  New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, NM, where he earned an Associate of Arts degree in 1980. He received a New Mexico Military Institute Scholarship for being #1 academically in his Freshman year and earned placement on the President’s List, Dean’s List, and Commander’s List. He was also inducted into  Phi Theta Kappa, the national academic honor society.

Commissioned as a  Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army in May 1980, Dr. Furlong served in the National Guard while he pursued his Bachelor’s degree. In 1985, he completed the  Military Intelligence Officer Basic Course and was assigned to the  18th Military Intelligence Battalion in Munich, Germany. He served overseas until 1988.

Upon returning to the U.S., he completed the  Military Intelligence Officer Advanced Course and  Counterintelligence training in 1989, then served with the  U.S. Army Special Security Group at Fort Meade, Maryland.

Driven by a desire to serve through medicine, Dr. Furlong earned his  Doctor of Medicine degree in 1994, completed residency in 1998, and successfully finished the  Medical Corps Officer Basic Course that same year. He went on to serve at  William Beaumont Army Medical Center from 1998 to 2002, where he held the position of  Assistant Chief of Radiology.

Throughout his military service, Dr. Furlong rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of  Lieutenant Colonel in May 2001. His career is decorated with honors, including  three Army Commendation Medals, recognizing his leadership, professionalism, and dedication to excellence.
